The American jazz pianist Thelonious Monk was raised in the Phipps Houses, situated in the historic Manhattan neighborhood of San Juan Hill. Most residents of this area were displaced during the development of Lincoln Center. The local musical scene and cultural atmosphere had a significant impact on Monk’s musical style.
