The construction of Idlewild Airport in Queens began in 1942 and was completed in 1948. The airport, renamed John F. Kennedy International Airport after the president’s assassination, hosted the first commercial flight by Pan American Airlines. It is currently undergoing renovation and expansion. Mayor Fiorello H.
